Hematological Parameters in Severe Complicated Plasmodium falciparum Malaria among Adults in Aden
نویسنده
چکیده
OBJECTIVE To study some hematological parameters in adult patients with complicated severe malaria and their relations to clinical outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a prospective study, including 77 patients from Aden Governorate with complicated severe malaria over the course of 2 years (2010-2011). RESULTS The common form of severe malaria in Aden was cerebral malaria (25.9%), followed by renal failure (18.2%), severe anemia (16.9%), and hepatitis (14.3%), with a case fatality rate of 7.8%. Hemoglobin concentration was significantly different among the various complications of severe malaria, while platelet and white blood cell counts did not show such differences. The mean age was older among patients that died. Hematological parameters did not significantly differ among dead or surviving patients. Thrombocytopenia was seen in 42.9% of patients and 18.2% of these had platelet counts of <50.0x109/L. However, none of them developed bleeding. CONCLUSION This study concluded that hematological changes are common complications encountered in severe malaria, but they are not related to the clinical outcome. CONFLICT OF INTEREST None declared.

Clinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Quinine in Children
Quinine is the best studied drug for treating severe malaria in very young children. Quinine may be administered in pregnancy and, at therapeutic doses, malformations have not been reported. Some strains of quinine from Southeast Asia and South America have become resistant. Quinine is the treatment of choice for the drug-resistant severe Plasmodium falciparum. The antimalarial mechanism of qui...

In 2010, there were estimated 219 million cases of malaria resulting in 666,000 deaths and two-thirds were children. Children are more vulnerable than adults to malaria parasites. In sub-Saharan African countries, maternal malaria is associated with up to 200,000 estimated infant deaths yearly. Malaria is caused by five Plasmodium parasites namely: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasm...

Abstract Background Malaria is an acute and chronic illness characterized by paroxysms of fever, chills, sweating, fatigue, anemia, and splenomegaly. Most malarial deaths occur in infants and young children.Anemia in malaria has diverse pathophysiologic mechanisms such as direct invasion of Red cells, In the following, we presented comparison of hematological aspects: children with Malaria an...

Background: Cerebral malaria (CM) is one of the major causes of death in African populations infected with Plasmodium falciparum. Only 1% of infected subjects develop CM. The reasons for these differences are not fully understood, but it is likely that the host humoral response against blood-stage antigens plays a role in protection from malaria, although the precise targets and mechanisms medi...

Despite rigorous effort made to control malaria for more than a century, it is still among the main public health problems in least developed regions of the world. Majority of deaths associated with malaria occur in sub-Sahara Africa among biologically risked groups. Thus, this study was designed to assess the incidence of severe malaria syndromes among children in Pawe Hospital, Northwest Ethi...
